If you do not have pure chemicals, you cannot make products. Fluid separation science is the science of purifying fluids. Anything from nail polish over pharmaceuticals to hip replacements relies on this. In fluid separation science, we call the smallest process unit, a unit operation. These unit operations harness different physical or chemical driving forces, to purify liquids, gases and to some extent solids.

Here at the Laboratory of Fluid Separations, we teach students the basic unit operations, how they work, how to improve them, how to minimize the energy converted in their use, how to design the processes and the vessels used for them, and a lot more.
